Iquitos Peru 8 March 2012

Our pick up from the airport

Motorkars
Iquitos (pronounced IKITOS) is the largest city in the Peruvian rainforest, has a population of 600,00 with 30,000 Motokars being the major form of transport together with buses that have no windows

The city can only be reached by airplane or boat. Ocean vessels can reach Iquitos from the Atlantic Ocean 3600km away. We are currently at 3.6deg south of the Equator or 180km south

Typical Peruvian dress

This city is far removed from the rest of the world and at the same time exhilarating. We spent the afternoon wandering around town dodging the Motokars, stopped for a drink at café overlooking the river and by chance found it was run by an American who was living, here after falling in love with a resident. The Dawn On the Amazon turned out to be the local hang out for ex-pats in Iquitos with the menu in English and pointing out that all vegetables, ice and cooking was prepared with purified water.

This is our starting point for our Amazon adventure.
